French Antique

Sophistication and elegance.

There has been somewhat of a french revolution in recent years. Lots of homes have a feature piece of furniture within a room and french antique has been the current trend.

Quite often these pieces can be purchased as reproduction, however you can still find the odd little treasure at an auction or street market. Hand painted detailing and old fashioned craftsmanship are the alluring charms of such items.

Turquoise – Pantone Colour of the Year 2010

Posted in Colour, Interior Design, Interior Furnishings, Turquoise on May 16, 2010 by NumberSeventySix

Today’s must have colour for fashion and interiors

‘turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.’

– Pantone

Turquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green mineral that is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminium, with the chemical formula CuAl6(PO4)4(OH)8·4H2O. It is rare and valuable in finer grades and has been prized as a gem and ornamental stone for thousands of years owing to its unique hue.

The gemstone turquoise represents the sign Sagittarius.

Turquoise is believed to be a protective talisman, a colour of deep compassion and healing, and a colour of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of colour word-association studies, we also find that Turquoise represents an escape to many – taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy.

Wallpaper – "Rich in design, not resources"

Posted in Interior Design, Interior Furnishings, Wallpaper on May 16, 2010 by NumberSeventySix

In the current wallcoverings market, environmentally friendly examples are extremely limited, and papers made with toxic inks, vinyl, and other noxious elements still plague the industry. In 2006, artists Jee Levin and Randall Buck founded Trove, a New York–based company that designs and manufactures commercially rated, environmentally responsible wallcoverings. Trove’s products are recyclable, use nontoxic and archival inks, and have a wax-based coating that is washable and durable. All papers are printed to the specific wall height to eliminate waste. Combining digital working methods with imagery inspired from nature, films, and their own paintings and drawings, the duo creates patterns up to twelve feet high and three to six feet wide. Indi is a graphic tribute to Alfred Hitchcock’s film The Birds, while Alar is inspired by Wim Wenders’s film Wings of Desire. Azha depicts an array of moths fluttering without direction, and represents how the designers can transform traditional motifs by playing with scale, color, and the image itself. In the end, Trove creates papers that are rich in design, not resources.

2010 Lighting Trends

Posted in Interior Design, Interior Furnishings, Trends on December 29, 2009 by NumberSeventySix

Good looking stylish fixtures are the trend for 2010.

  • Deco style lighting – hunt through secondhand markets for the real thing.
  • Environmentally friendly fixtures – brightening the day for the eco conscious homeowner. Look for sustainable sourced natural materials, bamboo, wood and recycled materials. Not only will they look good but they are helping our environment and your future.
  • Dimmer switches help keep energy usage down, as do automated lighting controls. Look for lighting to go more high tech as this trend continues.
  • Larger elaborate light fittings – great rooms need great features.
  • Unique designs – for those who have an eye for aesthetics. Creativity and uniqueness is the mantra.

Multi-dimensional room lighting is here to stay – more homeowners are becoming aware of their lighting needs; ambient, task, accent and decorative.
